Tip Calculator
Work out the tip and split the bill fairly — tip amount, total and per-person share, updated as you type.
About this tool
Tipping maths at the table — bill times a percentage, divided by the table — is simple arithmetic made awkward by the moment. This calculator does all three steps at once: the tip amount, the total with tip, and each person's equal share, with quick buttons for the common tip rates.
Customary tipping varies: in the US, 15–20% is standard for table service, 18–25% for excellent service, and around 10% for counter or delivery service in many places; norms differ by country and situation, and many countries include service in the bill. The calculator does the arithmetic — you bring the judgement.
How to use it
- Enter the bill amount.
- Choose or type the tip percentage.
- Set the number of people — the per-person share updates instantly.
Frequently asked questions
How is a tip calculated?
Tip = bill × (tip percent ÷ 100). A 20% tip on an $80 bill is $16. If you are splitting, the total (bill + tip) is divided by the number of people.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Traditionally on the pre-tax subtotal in the US, though many people tip on the total for simplicity. The difference is small; this calculator works on the amount you enter, so enter the base you prefer.
What is a standard tip percentage?
In US restaurants, 15% is the traditional baseline, 18–20% is now common, and 25% rewards standout service. Customs vary widely internationally — in Japan, for example, tipping is not customary at all.
